Residence deregistration
Service description
If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in the country, you must deregister.
The most important cases are moving abroad or deregistering a secondary residence.
If you move within Germany, you do not have to deregister. It is sufficient if you register with your new municipality.
Requirements
In the case of persons under 16 years of age, make sure that they are deregistered by the persons from whose home they are moving.
What documents are needed?
- Identity card or passport, if the registrant has reached the age of 16.
- Personal documents of the family members who are deregistered together on one deregistration form
- for children: Child passport or birth certificate
The competent authority may request the submission of further documents to verify the information (e.g. marriage certificate).
If you send the completed registration form for deregistration by post to the responsible office, enclose a copy of the identity documents for yourself and all family members to be deregistered. What are the fees?
None.
If you fail to comply with your obligation to deregister, or fail to do so in a timely manner, you are committing an administrative offense that may be punishable by a fine.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
You have to deregister within 2 weeks after moving out of the apartment. You can deregister already in the week before moving out of the apartment.
Legal basis
What else should I know?
You can deregister either in person (by visiting the Citizens' Registration Office) or in writing. After deregistration, you will receive a deregistration confirmation.
