Apply for a civil partnership certificate

    The civil partnership certificate serves as proof that you have entered into a civil partnership. You can obtain it from the civil registry office that registered your civil partnership or that subsequently registered your civil partnership entered into abroad.

    The civil partnership certificate contains:

    • Your first and last names before and during the domestic partnership
    • Place and date of birth of the partner
    • Place and Date of Establishment of the Domestic Partnership

    You can obtain the civil partnership certificate in the following forms:

    • Certificate
    • Certified copy from the civil partnership registry

    A certified printout from the civil partnership registry contains all the information that the civil registry office has recorded in connection with the civil partnership.

    In addition to the information provided, the printout also includes subsequent changes, such as the dissolution of the civil partnership or the conversion of the civil partnership into a marriage.

  • Requirements

    Civil partnership certificates contain personal information; therefore, their issuance is subject to data protection restrictions.

    • You are eligible to apply if you meet the following requirements:
      • You are at least 16 years old.
      • You are one of the life partners named in the certificate.
      • You are the parent of one of the partners.
      • You are a child or grandchild of the partners.
    • Close relatives, such as siblings, as well as individuals with no family relationship whatsoever, will receive a certificate only if they can demonstrate a legal interest, for example, by providing a letter from the probate court.

    If the civil partnership was entered into abroad, you must have it officially registered in Germany first.

  • What documents are needed?

    You will need to apply for a civil partnership certificate:

    • Your identity card or passport
      • a copy, if the request is submitted in writing
      • Online, you must verify your identity electronically using your ID card
    • When applying or picking up the item through a representative:
      • Written power of attorney from the authorized person
      • Identification card or passport of the representative and the person being represented
    • for other individuals, proof of their legal interest, such as:
      • a letter from the probate court
      • a court ruling
      • an enforceable judgment
