    Basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity is part of the minimum social security systems in Germany. The benefits of the minimum social security systems guarantee a humane subsistence level.

    • Basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity ensures the necessary means of subsistence for people in financial need.

    The entitlement to and the amount of basic old-age and reduced earning capacity benefits depends on your individual needs and your available income and assets.

    The total requirement consists of the following components:

    • Standard requirement
    • reasonable requirements for accommodation and heating
    • Possible additional requirements
    • Possible requirements for education for pupils of full age
    • in individual cases, contributions to health and long-term care insurance

    In addition, you will receive one-off benefits in special situations, such as initial equipment for your home.

    In addition to your individual needs, your income and assets - if available - are also taken into account. You must use these first to cover your living expenses. Exceptions are allowances and protected assets.

    If your income in old age (pension) or in the case of a full reduction in earning capacity is not sufficient for the necessary subsistence, you can apply for basic benefits.

  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    Basic benefits begin when the application is filed. There are no subsequent payments for periods prior to the application. Basic security benefits are regularly approved for 12 calendar months and then reviewed. If personal or financial circumstances change during the approval period, the changes must be reported. Increased benefits are paid at the earliest from the first of the month in which the change notification was made. Therefore, it is important to notify changes, such as a rent increase, immediately.

    You can receive benefits from the 1st of the month in which you submit your application. The benefit is usually granted for 12 calendar months.

    As a person entitled to benefits, you are obliged to help yourself and to claim other social benefits first if this will reduce your need for assistance.
